 Goldschmidt Vineyard 2001 Single
Vineyard Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, Game Ranch, Napa
Valley
The Game Ranch Vineyard is situated in the famed Oakville appellation
in the middle of the Napa Valley. Located on an old river bottom on the
eastern bench of the Silverado Trail, the vineyard is made up of very
boulder-filled, lean soils. In this stressful, low moisture situation,
the vines struggle to get a foot-hold. With perfect control over
irrigation, we are able to direct the vines to produce grapes of great
concentration and exceptional quality.
The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon is the
first release in a program designed to showcase single vineyard source
wines from both the Alexander and Napa Valley appellations. The goal is
to create wines that highlight the distinct characters, benefits and
attributes derived from these site specific harvests. Goldschmidt
Vineyard Cabernets are crafted with the best possible resources to
achieve exceptional richness, quality and balance - the hallmarks of
world-class wines.
"After 15 years of making
wine in the Napa Valley, I discovered this unusually boulder-filled
bench in the heart of the Oakville region. I was completely blown away
at the opportunity to make wines from this unique vineyard site.
Following our hunch, the team was not disappointed. The 2001 vintage is
perhaps the best vintage in the last 10 years and the first year we made
wine from this vineyard. The harvest yielded very small berries and the
excellent growing season afforded us a longer than average hang-time for
maximum flavor development."
